Summary

Under general supervision, provides basic environmental health services and program support. Activities are focused on assisting Tribal Health Organizations and Tribal Communities with environmental health consultative support services, applied public health, health research and health education activities.

Responsibilities

Provides routine environmental health technical and consultative services. Performs basic environmental public health tasks in support of Tribal Health Organization (THO) customers. This may include providing staff training and support for THO staff as well as traveling to remote villages to conduct surveys, perform assessments, promotes good environmental public health practice and provide written and/or oral recommendations regarding findings to community leaders and residents.

Provides general technical advice and guidance to regional health corporations, community health aides, and other community organizations or individuals related to environmental/public health.

Provides general interpretation of environmental sampling that may occur for community leaders, corporation personnel and community residents.

Can play a role in conducting environmental public health research studies. This may include assisting with protocol development, development of survey tools and educational materials, literature review, data collection, manuscript preparation, and project coordination.

Takes a substantial role in conducting/coordinating environmental public health-related special projects.

Supports Tribal Water Center Activities. This includes but is not limited to operator trainings, technical assistance and water fluoridation.

Assists with identifying and securing external funding resources to support program needs. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Knowledge of principles of environmental health practice. This includes knowledge of water and wastewater systems, water fluoridation, air quality, solid waste, food safety, child safety, etc.
  • Knowledge of research principles and techniques.
  • Skill in presentation and public speaking.
  • Skill in technical and professional writing.
  • Skill in working effectively with co-workers, representatives from regional Tribal organizations and Native populations.
  • Skill and proficiency in computer use and knowledge of Microsoft Office.


MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Level I- An Associated degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or a related field.

Level II - A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or related field.

Minimum Experience Qualification

Level I- Non-supervisory - Two (2) years Environmental Health experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education, experience and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Level II- Non-supervisory - Four (4) years Environmental Health experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Level I - N/A

Level II - Obtain Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian within one year.

Preferred Experience Qualification

Specific rural-Alaska experience is preferred.

Preferred Certification Qualification

According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications in one or more specialty areas.
