Job Title: Fiber Splicer Technician
Location: Remote (Northwestern Illinois Area)
Duration: 6 Months Contract to Hire
Job Description:
A fiber splicer technician is a specialist responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic cables. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality, reliable communication networks, especially in fields like telecommunications, internet service providers, and data centers.
Candidate can be located anywhere, but must be able to cover the north/northwestern Illinois area (Schaumburg, Crystal Lake, Rockford etc.). Client have 3 offices in that area that these resources could use, but the CTO is okay with them working remotely as long as they can cover these service areas in the field.
Key Responsibilities of a Fiber Splicer Technician:
Fiber Optic Cable Splicing:
Perform both fusion splicing and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables.
Ensure precise alignment of glass fibers to minimize signal loss and attenuation.
Use specialized equipment like splicing machines, cleavers, and optical fiber fusion splicing tools.
Testing and Troubleshooting:
Test and measure fiber optic signals using tools like optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), light meters, and power meters.
Troubleshoot fiber optic faults and resolve issues like fiber breaks, signal degradation, or improper connections.
Installation and Maintenance:
Install fiber optic cables in new network setups or perform maintenance on existing systems.
Ensure that fiber optic cables are properly routed, secured, and protected from physical damage.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of fiber optic installations, repairs, and test results.
Ensure that systems meet specific performance standards, and document any deviations or issues.
Safety and Compliance:
Follow industry safety standards and protocols to prevent accidents or injuries (e.g., using protective gear when handling fibers, avoiding exposure to high-powered equipment).
Ensure all installations comply with local, state, and national standards for network performance and quality.
Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Skills: Strong understanding of fiber optic technologies, including splicing methods, testing equipment, and network setup.
Attention to Detail: Fiber splicing requires a high level of precision, so attention to detail is critical.
Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot complex fiber optic issues and ensure the correct operation of networks.
Physical Stamina: The role may involve working in confined spaces, at heights, or in outdoor conditions, requiring physical endurance.
Education and Training: Formal education in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field. Many technicians also complete specialized training programs or certifications in fiber optic technology (e.g., FOA certification).
Tools Used by Fiber Splicer Technicians:
Fusion Splicing Machines: Used to permanently join fiber optic cables.
Fiber Optic Testers and OTDR: For testing the quality of fiber optic lines and identifying faults.
Cleavers: Precision tools used to cut the fibers with an accurate edge.
Strippers and Cutters: To remove the coating from fiber optic cables
