Job Description

This position is responsible for the overall technical support of physical production and classroom instruction associated with the School of Filmmaking curriculum as well as other School sanctioned productions. This position requires extensive knowledge of digital and film production and associated equipment. The position is responsible for maintaining all production equipment and for adhering to all policies and procedures in support of the School of Filmmaking’s mission. The position is responsible for maintaining and/or establishing relationships with vendors, suppliers, technical personnel and entities in the ongoing acquisition, installation and maintenance of production equipment. This position supervises the Technical Coordinator and represents Technical Operations in production and other School of Filmmaking meetings. This position works closely with other departments and the administration to evaluate existing departmental policies and to update them as necessary.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • ·Maintain and track the School of Filmmaking’s inventory of production equipment.
  • Oversee and manage department’s budget in compliance with the School of Filmmaking’s purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, rental houses and service centers to purchase, rent and/or repair production equipment to support the School of Filmmaking productions and classroom instruction.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies, expendables, and parts necessary for the in-house repairs of production equipment.
  • Research new and emerging technologies, in conjunction with faculty and staff, to make recommendations for the acquisition of new equipment.
  • Manage and supervise Technical Operations Coordinator and student employees. · Regularly evaluate policies and procedures related to Technical Operations and update as necessary.
  • Represent Technical Operations in all School of Filmmaking meetings and functions.


Technical Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to students, staff, and faculty regarding equipment use and care.
  • Ability to recommend the appropriate equipment to accommodate specific production needs.
  • Document the use of equipment by faculty, students and staff. Review appropriate sections of student handbook.
  • Ensure that all equipment checked out from Technical Operations is in safe working order and that it is returned to Technical Operations in the same condition.
  • Ability to identify equipment damage, determine cause, and assess how to proceed with repair.
  • Document all loss and damage of production equipment and follow appropriate policies and procedures of  UNCSA and the School of Filmmaking.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic equipment and simple tool use to facilitate basic repairs.
  • Act as a consultant to students on all 16mm and 35mm class projects as well as on student film productions by reviewing lighting diagrams and electrical distribution layouts
  • Maintain the operation and care of the three lighting grid systems in the sound stages. Properly inspect and inventory all motors and rigging systems.


Instructional Support

  • Teach fundamental instruction for lighting and grip as well as set safety to first year film students in the Fundamentals of Cinematography classes.
  • Train and certify cinematography students through hands-on workshops demonstrating how to work the JL Fisher Camera Dollies properly and professionally
  • Train and certify cinematography students through hands-on workshops demonstrating how to operate the film generators while on location and how to properly distribute the electricity and balance the load.

Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, although substantially greater amounts of professional experience are typical and often required. For candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in film, digital media, or a similar specialized and technical field and at least 2 years of work related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
