We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Waste and Diversion Manager to lead our waste management and recycling programs, ensuring that we effectively reduce, reuse, and recycle materials across our operations.
Job Overview The Waste and Diversion Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing waste reduction and diversion strategies. This role involves overseeing waste management operations, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and driving initiatives to minimize the environmental impact of our activities. This role reports to the Senior Director of Support Services within the Operations organization. Roles You Will Play
Key Responsibilities: - Operational Oversight: Oversee the relationship between Cortland and third-party management. Manage daily waste management operations, provide support, troubleshooting, customer service, and evaluations for all waste and recycle programs. Collaborate with waste haulers and recycling facilities to optimize service and efficiency.
- Data Analysis: Monitor and analyze waste data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. Use data to set goals and track progress toward waste reduction targets. Oversee the performance of waste and recycle expenses, reimbursements, and billing programs for all properties. Perform research and analysis for waste, recycling, and sustainability initiatives in Cortland’s markets.
- Budget Management: Oversee budget for waste management and diversion programs, including procurement of services and equipment. Identify cost-saving opportunities and manage expenditures effectively. Perform calculations, trend analysis, and quality control on waste and recycle programs.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work with internal departments, community management, and regulatory agencies to foster partnerships and collaborative efforts. Address any concerns or issues related to waste management.
- Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal waste management regulations. Prepare and submit reports on waste diversion performance, environmental impact, and compliance.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and technological advancements in waste management. Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance program effectiveness. Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.
Building Blocks of Success
- Experience of 4+ years in waste management, recycling, sustainability, business, or customer service with a strong understanding of waste management regulations and best practices.
- Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Waste Management, Business Administration, Finance, Real Estate, related field, or equivalent experience.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated experience in managing projects and capable of applying critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving, and organization skills.
- Proficient in data analysis and reporting tools including the use of Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with budget management and financial oversight.
Work Environment: - Office environment with occasional overnight travel for site visits to communities or waste management sites.
